Sarah Nettleton is Professor of Sociology at the University of York. Her substantive research projects have focused on topics such as recovery from drug dependency, running, unexplained illness, diagnosis and more recently architecture and health and social care. What unites her projects is a conceptual focus on embodiment, everyday life and the negotiated nature of formal and informal knowledge. She first developed these theoretical interests during her PhD studies that looked at dentistry as explored in her book Power, Pain and Dentistry (1992). In 1998 she co-edited The Body in Everyday Life and in 2012 she co-authored The Every Day Lives of Recovering Heroin Users (Neale, Nettleton and Pickering). Her work has attracted funding from the Nuffield Foundation, the British Academy/Leverhulme, and the ESRC with the latter supporting the project Buildings in the making: a sociological exploration of architecture in the context of health and social care (2015-2018).
