Dr Susan Dray is a Research Associate at Manchester Metropolitan University working on a Leverhulme Trust project called UrBEn-ID, which is exploring how language practices contribute to the making of relationships in Manchester's inner city Pupil Referral Unit. This ethnographic study is working in small 'schools' which bring together young people who have been excluded from mainstream secondary education, youth workers, social workers, health workers and teachers.

Susan is a discourse-analyst and ethnographer by training and is interested in the role of language (verbal and textual) in processes that concern the generation and translation of knowledge across and between practices, including the role of texts (and literacy) in patients' understanding of health/social care.
