Julie Ellis is a sociologist and a researcher in the Department of Sociological Studies at the University of Sheffield. Her research interests are in medical sociology, social and relational aspects of death and dying, material culture and everyday lives. Julie is currently working with Kate Reed and Elspeth Whitby (University of Sheffield) on the ‘End or Start of Life’ project. This is an ESRC funded study about early life loss, visual technology and the transformation of traditional post-mortem.
Julie graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2011 with a PhD in Sociology. Her PhD research was an ethnographic study funded by the ESRC which explored the experience of everyday family life in families where a relative was living with a life-threatening illness.
Prior to joining the ‘End of Start of Life’ project, Julie was a researcher with the ‘Space for Sharing’ project (Information School, University of Sheffield). She used qualitative methods to explore how people share information, emotions and experiences online when they are living with a life-threatening condition.
