Eleanor Johnson is a Research Associate at the University of Bristol’s School for Policy Studies, working on a project entitled ‘The Provision of Social Care in Extra Care Housing’ (ECHO). She is also a PhD candidate at Cardiff University. Her PhD research is an ethnographic study of residential care for older people. The overall academic aim of this research is to provide an in depth understanding of how residential care homes at distinct ends of the market organise care and, further, to examine the impact which these forms of work organisation have on the quality of care provided to older people.
Among other things, Eleanor is interested in the spatial organisation of care. Her research considers how the architecture of residential care environments – as well as the use, placement and movement of objects – allows care workers to enforce (or not) strict spatial boundaries concerning the management of personal care activities and their resulting waste products. She is interested in how this boundary work maintains or undercuts not only hygiene standards but also more immeasurable virtues - dignity, respect, privacy - which are vital to the care of older people.
